When you talk about Hong Kong cuisine, people will think of a fantastic fusion of Eastern and also a hint of Western foods. And almost automatically dim sum also comes to mind. At Hong Kong Cafe (HKC) located next to the Sarinah Thamrin building, the variety of their Hong Kong style traditional, hawker and fusion dishes are so very present in the menu. You may call this place a cafe due to their causal menu, but the quality of the food and the ambience of the venue certainly surpasses the expectations of a normal modest cafe, thanks to their minimalist and very delightful ambiance.

You can expect to find many familiar dishes such as rice bowl, noodles, favourite Hong Kong style hawker dishes, dim sum and so on. But one of their unique specialities is the Baked Rice. Just imagine your ordinary lasagne or macaroni dish, except replace the pasta with rice. I can understand why this is a favourite amongst Asians as it is basically 'nasi goreng on steroids' due to the hefty amounts of melted cheese all over it. But it was too good to pass up! The Baked Rice dish that we recommend is the HK Special Baked Rice as it has the freshest seafood such as prawns, squid and fish, and also a deep fried chicken breast. The rice is very flavourful and it is a really addictive dish. You can enjoy the Baked Rice in over 10 varieties with beef and pumpkin yam, mushroom cream sauce and much more.

Overall HKC, we can safely say has a very delicious, eclectic and generally 'GOOD FOOD', but the one dish that has made HKC into more than just your ordinary cafe is the steamed fish with fermented bean curd sauce, freshly chopped coriander and red chillies swimming in a shallow pool of Chinese white wine and soy sauce. It was simply superb! If you wish to add an extra kick to the steamed fish, do try their homemade chilli oil sauce which is very different from what you might get from other types.

HKC also has perfect light meals and a breakfast menu, with items such as the HK French Toast. A very thick french toast (we actually think its more like fried bread) that is accompanied by honey and srikaya jam with of course the slab of melting butter on top. They open at 10 am though so don't expect a early Brekkie start here.

Super good food and service!
