For Jakartans, the old Djakarta Theatre Building in Thamrin and its vicinity is extremely nostalgic, as it was once one of the most popular areas to hang out on the weekends. Although throughout the decades, there has been many changes, one place has always been there. The Nanaban Tei Shabu Shabu restaurant has been a long-standing fixture for around 20 odd years and judging by its interior, the decor and furniture have probably not been altered for a while either.
Their open buffet, which is an all you can eat concept and their regular great deals are what really attract consumers to this place. The three open chillers are filled with meat, vegetables and seafood of your choice to be grilled at the teppanyaki station, while the other fridge display is filled with various appetiser and desert options such as papaya salad, fruit salad, fruits and the like. But the one dish that caught our eye was actually their Kimchi And it tasted as good as it looked.
At Nanaban Tei, do not expect that you will get a big bowl of boiling broth over your portable gas stove at your table, all the shabu shabu here is cooked in one spot with your choice of sukiyaki sweet broth or savoury original shabu shabu broth. All you have to do is go to the chiller, pick your choice of ingredients and the servers will cook it for you. This actually is a great idea as the broth becomes full of flavour from all the other ingredients cooked for all the other customers previously.
With over 50 types of vegetables and meats to choose from, you will be spoilt for choice. Their generous variety in appetisers and dessert choices definitely make Nanaben Tei stand out from other budget shabu shabu restaurants.
