Since their glory days back when they were located in Ratu Plaza in the mid 1990s to their present location at Plaza Senayan (level 4), Sushi Sei is known to be the place to go for the freshest sashimi among enthusiasts. You know what they say-that one sure way to recognize an authentic Japanese restaurant is to examine the regular patrons;if its mostly or all Japanese, you are in for a genuine experience. If not, walk away.
Sushi Sei is mostly packed during lunch time with white collar office workers and Japanese and Korean ladies having their monthly arisan gatherings. Their lunch menu features mainly on the lunch boxes bento or trays, tempura, teriyaki sets, Sushi and noodle sets. Dinner on the other hand features more of the a la carte menu of sashimi and sushi set menus. Furthermore you can enjoy the comprehensive menu from Soba, Udon, Fusion sushi rolls, and amazing appetizers steamed, fried or even raw. Their individual assortments of raw fish are quite impressive with freshest supply of kanpachi belly, otoro belly, namauni, octopus, prawns and scallops etc. it is evident from their Sushi bar, where in you can see the skilful Japanese chefs hard at work, putting their faces so close to the sashimi on the wooden board while cautiously slicing them with sharp knives.
The Sashimi Moriawase Set comes highly recommended and it offers a range of fresh sliced raw seafood. The Tokujyootsukuri which is the superior version of this menu serves the freshest Tuna prime Chuttoro,Hamachi, Raw scallop, hokigai and herring roe that just pops up all the juicy flavours in your mouth.
One of their popular dishes among customers is the KanitamaInaniwa Udon. The broth has an almost tea fragrance due to the combination of mirin and soy sauce. The light brown broth is also filled with strands of egg whites, scallions and shredded pink crab sticks topped with a generous portion of chopped chives. The wheat-flour noodles are much thinner than regular Udon noodles and are exceptionally good.
Your experience in a Japanese restaurant is not complete until you have a taste of their Signature Sushi rolls. The best seller at Sushi Sei by far is the Aburi Salmon Cheese dish .A generous dollop of Japanese mayonnaise rests on the raw salmon, which is torched so lightly to a burnt perfection. Once you bite into it a cheesy surprise just delightsyou. The combination of the savoury mayonnaise, crunchiness of the cucumber, seaweed, crabsticks combined with the very fresh salmon is surely a heavenly experience for any sushi lover.
The dishes are quite pricey compared to other sushi restaurants and is definitely a pay-day treat.
Overall, I still recommend this restaurant if you like good sushi & sashimi in Plaza Senayan mall.
